Congratulations to all of the Kenneth Joyce Foundation 2013 Scholarship recipients!

Glastonbury High School Scholarships

Shealagh Clark plans to attend the College of the Holy Cross this fall for pre-med. She shadowed a surgeon in June 2012 as well as attended a medicine forum in Boston. She was co-captain of the successful varsity field hockey team. Shealagh has earned a number of awards and achievements throughout her high school career. She spends her time tutoring students at Smith Middle School and volunteering at Catherine’s Place Women’s Shelter and House of Bread. Shealagh dedicated much of her time to educating her peers about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and violence with D.A.R.E.

Courtney Peterson plans to attend Wellesley College this fall with her older sister, Meghan. Courtney played field hockey all four years of high school earning All-State and Regional All American honors in 2012 as well as being named team captain. She has plans to continue playing in college. She volunteers in numerous activities through her church and community. Having Cystic Fibrosis has not slowed her down; rather she has inspired others to follow their dreams regardless of what challenges need to be overcome. Courtney is a critical Ambassador for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in their fund raising activities.

Elena Woodard plans to attend UConn in the fall to study psychology. Elena participates in many activities to make her community a better place. She is most proud of her work with the Comic Book Club, a place where kids with social disorders and others can come together. Through the comic book club she has watched a boy who initially “would not speak a sentence in public to a leader who spreads his light to everyone”. The desire led her to study psychology at UConn and pursue a career as a high school guidance counselor.

Tyler Janssen plans to attend Bates College this fall to study economics. Tyler was a prominent member of both varsity football and baseball where he has earned all-conference and all academic teams; he was one of the captains for football this past fall.   Tyler was selected as the student athlete of the month of October. Tyler is a major contributor to his community through the Big Brother/Big Sister liaison program, Peer education, and coaching youth basketball and football.

Jack Ostrowski plans to attend Trinity College in the fall. John participated in numerous sports earning captains honors on varsity track and JV basketball. Jacks contribution to the community includes the founding of the “Post Game Foundation” that gives student athletes the chance to give back to the underprivileged outside of their demanding sports schedules. He is also active in Cherish the Children, Peer Education, St. Dunstan’s youth group, and coaching youth basketball.

Jonathan Kaplan plans to attend the University of Vermont in the fall to study business. Jon is a dedicated lacrosse goalie spending many hours a week improving his performance and the performance of his teammates to reach the next level. This dedication has earned him a lacrosse scholarship at UVM as well as being selected as Captain of the varsity team.   Jon contributes a lot of his time volunteering for activities, Sharing Hope Walk for Brain Tumor Research, coaching youth sports and serving as camp counselor at summer camp. 

Kathleen Morrisroe plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study exercise science and chemistry. Kathleen has been a prominent member of her crew team all four years at GHS being named a captain in 2012.  Kathleen was chosen as ambassador to represent GHS at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar, followed by representing Connecticut in the World Leadership conference in Chicago.  Through that experience her goal is to be a person who inspires others which she has achieved through the NAMES can Really Hurt Us program at school.

RHAM High School Scholarships

Meagan Goode plans to attend Quinnipiac University to become a Physician Assistant. She has been a leader on the cross country team making underclassmen feel welcome and encouraging everyone to do their best. Meagan is the president of the RHAM chapter of the National Honor Society where she has organized service events as well as encouraging participation. Meagan has volunteered for the Habitat for Humanity, the AHM telethon, the Manchester soup kitchen, the Kidney foundation walk and the Kenneth Joyce foundation flag football tournament. She has volunteered at the Marlborough food bank since 2005 where she has learned that a person can make a large difference through small actions.

Anthony Rocco intends to study business management at CCSU. He has been involved with DECA, the business program at RHAM, throughout high school and is a chapter officer his senior year. He placed first in the state conference and in the top 20 at the National competition in Callifornia for DECA.   He has been insturmental in the Audio Visual Club, which he helped bring the addition of a production truck, one of the only in the country.  Anthony was selected captain of both the indoor and outdoor track teams and was the student advisor for the ski club. He has been involved in the Andover basketball tournament, the Greater Hartford Disc Golf Open, the Andover Happy Halloween night as well as volunteering for the KJ Life flag football tournament.
