2016 Scholarships

Congratulations to all of the Kenneth Joyce Foundation 2016 Scholarship recipients!

Katie Barnicle has been greatly involved in her community throughout her high school experience.   In her youth she cheered for Glastonbury Youth Football Association  (GYFA) and because of her passion for cheerleading she returned as a coach.  Katie has also served on the leadership team at church and as a Truth about Hate facilitator as well.  Katie plans to attend Providence College to study Secondary Education/ Mathmatics.

Will Boyd has been a leader starting at a young age by joining the Boy Scouts of America.  He has held positions starting as a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, Patrol Leader, Troop Guide and eventually attained the role of Assistant Senior Patrol Leader where he was in charge of over fifty scouts at ounce.  Will plans to study Biomedical Engineering at UCONN.

Rachel Cohen has served on the class council at GHS as the Secretary and the Vice President.  She managed the class budget, gave speeches, and helped plan Junior Prom and Senior Ball.  She was also on the Advisory Club planning activies for underclassmen.  Rachel also coached youth basketball and lacross.  Rachel's bigest  point of pride comes from bringing food to a homeless shelter on a regular basis, delivering leftovers after parties and meetings.   Rachel will attend Bucknell University and study Neuroscience and Psychology.

Rachel Herwerth has more determination that any young woman you're likely to meet.  She has worked endlessly to be a level 10 gymnist.  Over four years of injuries and intense recovery her determination never waivered.  Throughout her recoveries Rachel served as a leader to fellow gymnist, inspiring them to improve themselves.  When her injuries finally sidelined her she began coaching younger girls at the gym.  Rachel will attend Stonehill College and study Neuroscience.

Ryan Leahy brought a admirable passion to GHS.  He played GHS Basketball all four years and was named captian his senior year, he encouraged his teammates when they were not playing at their best and stresses the importance of playing as a team.  Ryan led the "GHS 12th Man", the fan section of GHS sports.  He would organize all the students to encourage attendance to all sporting events to support both the athletes and the school.  Ryan will attend UCONN to pursue a Business degree.

James Sowa is a firm believer in good sportsmanship.  He has been a competitive sailer for many years and has taken to coaching as well.  James also participates in golf competitions where he spreads his positive attitude to those around him.  James plans to study Engineering at college.

Jack Twardy has always aspired to be a leader in his community.  He was named captian of the varsity basketball team at GHS and worked hard to show his team that he earned the title.  Off the court Jack works hard at his church, leading his peers, serving as Deacon and participating in community service.  Jack plans to study Business at St. Lawrence University.
